Waste & Resource Recovery

Food Donation Network

Food-Donation

The Food Donation Network aims to connect supermarkets that have excess food with charities that provide food relief services. This connection will increase food donation in regional communities, with the benefit of diverting food waste from regional landfills and alleviating issues associated with food insecurity.

Targeted forum meetings allowed supermarket managers to meet their local charity volunteers. Overall, there is enormous potential for supermarkets to donate their excess food to charities. Whilst organisations such as SecondBite and OzHarvest successfully rescue a large quantity of excess food, there remains a large amount of excess food which goes to landfill. The Food Donation Network aims to fill in the gaps throughout regional communities and establish ongoing relationships between supermarkets and charities.
